YoHealth Malta Premier – Closing Round – Matchday3
Ħamrun Spartans……2
Sliema Wanderers…..0
Ħamrun Spartans delivered a controlled and mature performance to overcome Sliema Wanderers and remain firmly among the leading sides, trailing Gzira United by two points in the YoHealth Malta Premier League Closing Round.
The Spartans took an early advantage when a teasing delivery into the penalty area from Joseph Mbong was not dealt with by the Sliema defence, allowing the ball to drift past everyone and find the net, giving Ħamrun a deserved lead inside the opening ten minutes.
Ħamrun continued to dictate proceedings and came close to doubling their advantage shortly before the interval. A well-worked move saw Shaisen Attard release Cetar Valencia inside the area, but his low effort from close range struck the upright, allowing Sliema to reach the break only a goal down.
Early in the second half, Sliema attempted to respond, with Mamadu Bah testing Francisco Celio from distance, though the goalkeeper was equal to the effort and dealt with it confidently.
As the match progressed, Ħamrun remained patient and organised. A low cross towards Adam Magri Overend threatened to cause problems for the Sliema defence, but Celio once again read the situation well and gathered safely.
Sliema’s best chance of the match arrived midway through the second half when Abdulahi Awad delivered an inviting cross into the area. Marcelo Barros rose unmarked and directed a powerful header on target, only for Celio to produce an excellent save and divert the ball for a corner.
Late efforts from Edmond Agius failed to trouble the Spartans’ defence, and Ħamrun eventually sealed the contest moments before the final whistle. Ceter broke forward with purpose, kept his composure inside the area and calmly finished past Kevin Emeka to confirm the victory.
The result underlined Ħamrun’s consistency and discipline, while Sliema were left to reflect on missed opportunities at key moments.
