Malta Premier insists that amount of solidarity funds for new season is yet to be quantified by UEFA

The Malta Premier League (MPL), which represents the top-tier football clubs in Malta, has issued an official statement clarifying its position regarding the distribution of UEFA solidarity funds. This comes in the wake of recent claims made by representatives of the Challenge League.

The Background

New UEFA regulations clearly state that solidarity funds are intended for clubs in each country’s top domestic division. In Malta’s case, this means the Malta Premier League is the primary beneficiary of such funds. However, UEFA does allow for up to 15% of these funds to be allocated to the division directly below – the Challenge League – if a qualified majority of top-tier clubs agrees.

Leading by Example in Europe

The MPL disclosed that in the previous season, it voluntarily allocated 12.5% of its solidarity funds to the Challenge League — the highest percentage among any league in Europe. This, according to the MPL, clearly shows its commitment to supporting the football pyramid in Malta in a fair and sustainable way.

Premature Demands

Contrary to the assertions made by the Challenge League Standing Committee, the MPL insisted that the solidarity fund allocation for the upcoming season has not yet been confirmed by UEFA. As such, no decisions can or should be made until the actual figures are known.

The league maintains that it would be financially irresponsible to agree on figures or percentages blindly. In fact, last season’s decision to allocate funds to the Challenge League was made only after the precise amounts from UEFA had been confirmed — not beforehand.

Unreasonable Pressure

The MPL strongly condemned the Challenge League Standing Committee for attempting to unilaterally impose a decision — not only before the season starts, but for over a year in advance. The MPL described this as an irresponsible approach, especially given the many financial uncertainties that still need to be addressed.

Other Key Considerations

In addition to the Challenge League’s request, other bodies such as the Youth FA have also submitted funding requests. There are also significant costs associated with the implementation of Football Video Review (VAR) in the Malta Premier League. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether the Malta FA (MFA) will continue contributing to the Homegrown Fund, which supports youth player development.

What’s Next?

The MPL concluded by stating that in the coming weeks, it will continue to thoroughly assess the best and most responsible use of UEFA solidarity funds, ensuring they serve their true intended purpose. The primary goal is to sustain and strengthen the top-tier clubs, while also seeking a fair balance where possible.

Conclusion

The MPL remains committed to a serious, transparent, and fact-based approach. Decisions regarding public or European funds must be made with full knowledge of the amounts involved, not under pressure from other parties. In this matter, financial prudence and responsible governance are being prioritised above all else.
