One of the standout fixtures of the YoHealth Malta Premier League weekend takes place on Saturday afternoon as Ħamrun Spartans face Sliema Wanderers at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
Ħamrun come into the match in strong form after an excellent Opening Round, where they finished top with 34 points from 16 matches. They recorded ten wins, four draws and only two defeats, showing consistency at both ends of the pitch. Their Closing Round has also started positively, with a win against Tarxien and a draw versus Valletta, extending their unbeaten league run to five matches.
The Spartans have shared their goals around the squad, with N’Dri Koffi and Matias Nicolas Garcia leading the scoring charts on four goals each. Joseph Mbong has been particularly influential, topping the assist charts with six and possibly reaching his 250th Premier League appearance if selected. Hamrun have no suspensions, although several key players are one yellow card away from a ban.
Sliema Wanderers sit fourth after the Opening Round, collecting 26 points. Their campaign has been more mixed, but they remain dangerous opponents, especially in big matches. In the Closing Round, Sliema have picked up one win and one defeat and will be keen to find more consistency. They have scored in their last two matches and have avoided draws in their last three outings.
Much of Sliema’s attacking threat comes from Sulahmana Mamadu Bah, who has scored six league goals, while Roko Prsa has also been a key player, contributing both goals and Man of the Match performances. However, the Wanderers will be without defender Dejan Djuric, who is suspended for this match.
The two sides have already met twice this season, with one win each. Sliema won 2–0 earlier in the campaign, while Ħamrun responded with a narrow 1–0 victory in the return fixture. Recent history suggests a tight contest, with 11 of the last 12 league meetings producing two goals or fewer.
Modica’s side will aim to control the game, while Sliema will look to stay compact and strike on the break.
