Ħamrun Spartans FC have issued an official statement recognising their historic progression in European competition and performace against Maccabi Tel Aviv, while also addressing a disciplinary matter involving two senior players.
Following their impressive performance against Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, the club confirmed they have advanced to the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League,a first for any Maltese club.
“Reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League is a historic milestone, one that no other Maltese club has ever achieved, and we are immensely proud of this accomplishment,” the club stated.
Despite falling short on the scoreboard, the Spartans emphasised the quality and determination shown by their squad.
“Our team delivered a performance that deserved more. The final result does not reflect the quality, determination, and spirit shown on the pitch.”
However, the club acknowledged that this landmark performance was overshadowed by an incident involving captain Henry Bonello and player Rafael Compri at the end of the match.
“As a Club, we categorically condemn such behaviour. It does not reflect our values, the standards we uphold, the level we want to arrive at and the image we publicly promote.”
Ħamrun Spartans are taking swift action, confirming that the Governance and Ethics Board is being convened immediately. Disciplinary measures will follow.
“Disciplinary and corrective action will be taken to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of our Club.”
The club concluded by thanking fans and reaffirming its commitment to high standards both on and off the field.
“Thank you to our supporters for standing by us. We remain committed to excellence, on and off the field.”
