Dominik Szoboszlai scored an 88th-minute penalty to give Liverpool a much-needed 1-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League. It was only their second victory in seven games.
Liverpool travelled to Italy without Mohamed Salah, who was left out after criticising the club and manager Arne Slot following Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Leeds. Despite the off-field drama, Liverpool started well. Curtis Jones forced a save from Yann Sommer early on, and Ibrahima Konaté thought he had scored with a header after half an hour. However, the goal was ruled out after a long VAR check because Hugo Ekitike handled the ball from Virgil van Dijk’s knockdown.
Inter improved after that let-off. Lautaro Martínez almost put them ahead before half-time, but Alisson reacted quickly to keep out his powerful header.
Chances were rare in the second half, with both sides defending firmly. Ekitike tried a long-range effort, but Sommer dealt with it comfortably. Liverpool’s best chance fell to Conor Bradley in the 80th minute, but he hit his shot straight at Sommer.
Just when the match looked set to end goalless, Liverpool were awarded a late penalty after Alessandro Bastoni was judged to have tugged Florian Wirtz’s shirt. Szoboszlai stepped up and fired his spot-kick beyond Sommer to secure the win. The result moves Liverpool up to eighth place, level on points with fifth-placed Inter, who have now lost two Champions League games in a row.
