Ħamrun Spartans continue to etch their name into Maltese football history after reaching the second round of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. Their dramatic 11-10 penalty shoot-out victory over Lithuanian champions Žalgiris underlined both their resilience and growing stature in European football.
Their most recent opponents, Žalgiris, are no strangers to making history themselves, having become the first Lithuanian side to reach a UEFA group stage in 2023. But this time, it was Ħamrun who emerged victorious, earning a landmark tie against Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv. The Spartans will host the first leg at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on the 22nd July, with the return fixture in Poland a week later.
Whatever the outcome, Ħamrun’s European journey is already guaranteed to continue deep into the summer, and the possibilities are historic. Should they be eliminated by Dynamo Kyiv, they will move into the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. If they progress further in that competition, they could find themselves just one round away from the Europa League group stages.
Even in the event of elimination at that point, Ħamrun are assured a place in the UEFA Conference League play-offs, a final hurdle before the group stage. This effectively means that the Spartans are now only a few steps away from ensuring European group-stage football for the first time in Malta’s history. Ħamrun already made Maltese football history in the 2022/23 season by reaching the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League, where they were narrowly eliminated by Serbian side Partizan Belgrade
