Ħamrun advance after epic penalty shootout

Ħamrun Spartans secured a historic qualification to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League following an epic and dramatic victory over Lithuanian side FK Žalgiris. The Maltese team emerged victorious with a 13-10 score after a marathon penalty shootout, making it one of the most thrilling European encounters in the club’s history.

After suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg in Lithuania, Ħamrun responded with a 2-0 win of their own at home. With the aggregate score level, the match proceeded to extra time, which also ended goalless. The outcome was ultimately decided through a penalty shootout that featured a staggering 28 kicks.

The first major moment of drama came in the 19th minute when Joseph Mbong appeared to give Ħamrun the lead with a headed goal. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to an offside decision, denying the home fans an early celebration.

Nonetheless, Ħamrun remained composed and took the lead in the 35th minute. Substitute Serigne Thioune rose to meet a cross from Rafael Compri and powered a header past Žalgiris goalkeeper Carlos Olses. Just five minutes later, Joseph Mbong doubled the score with a powerful long-range effort that caught Olses by surprise.

The match moved into extra time, during which no goals were scored. Žalgiris finished the match with 10 men after Vasilije Radenović was sent off, adding to the pressure on the Lithuanian side.

The penalty shootout was a tense and nerve-wracking affair. Ħamrun saw successful conversions from Emerson Marcelina, Mouad Al Faris, Vincenzo Polito, Jhonny, Nikolai Micallef, Ryan Camenzuli, Ognjen Bjelicic, and Henry Bonello. Jovan Čadjenović and Serigne Thioune both missed their initial penalties.

For Žalgiris, Liviu Antals, Joris Moutachy, Ebenezer Ofori, Nemanja Mihajlovic, Mohamed Youla, Henrique Devens, Kevin Lukasevic, and Carlos Olses all found the net. However, Dino Salcinovic and Luka Dumancic missed their attempts.

Eventually, during the second round of sudden-death penalties, Jovan Čadjenović redeemed himself by scoring the decisive goal that sent the Ħamrun fans into wild celebrations and sealed their place in the next round.

With this victory, Ħamrun Spartans progress to the second qualifying round of the competition, where they will now face Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv.
