After the events in Brussels, the coach of the Swedish national team, Janne Andersson, points out that human lives always come first and that the match against Belgium could not continue after learning about the murder.
At least three Swedish citizens lost their lives in the terrorist attack.
“It is difficult to think about football now. We played a good first half. When we got back, we got a message. I think that’s amazing. Where is this world going? Or do we think we could finish the second half? That’s a question that I’m not interested in at the moment,” says Sweden coach Andersson.
The president of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Fredrik Reinfeld, also agreed with this decision.
“The players were informed about what happened during halftime. They and the Belgian team then asked UEFA to stop the game. It’s the best decision. We have to show respect for the player’s choice. Swedish players have families in the stands. There are 700 fans in yellow jerseys at the stadium. The safety of these people comes first. We love football, but we also respect life,” said Reinfeld.
The match in Brussels was stopped at 1:1.
