Roderick Briffa, one of Malta’s most iconic footballers, has announced his retirement from the game after a remarkable career spanning over 25 years.
Born on 24 August 1981 in Valletta, Briffa began his senior career with Birkirkara FC during the 1998–99 season. A short loan spell at Pietà Hotspurs in 2001–02 helped shape his early development before he returned to Birkirkara and played a crucial role in winning two Premier League titles (2000 and 2006) and two FA Trophies. In 2007, he moved to Sliema Wanderers and later joined Valletta FC in 2009, where he enjoyed the most successful chapter of his career, collecting multiple league titles, FA Trophies and Super Cups between 2010 and 2016. His exceptional performances earned him individual accolades, including the prestigious Malta Footballer of the Year award in 2010–11 and again in 2015–16.
Briffa’s dedication and consistency extended beyond the domestic stage. He made his debut for the Malta national team in 2003 and went on to earn 100 caps, scoring one goal and becoming one of the country’s most capped players. He later represented clubs such as Gżira United, Mosta FC, and Victoria Hotspurs, showing the same commitment and professionalism that defined his entire career.
In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Briffa reflected on his journey with emotion: “Upgrowing from childhood until today, it has been a wonderful football journey that today has come to an end! With tears in my eyes, I would like to say a big thank you to all coaches, players, supporters, team management and all the football presidents that helped me out through my road! Today, I can say I succeeded, and I’m proud of what I have been through.” He added, “Being a part of these following not only teams but also a family made my career one of the best!” — listing all the clubs he was proud to represent: Birkirkara FC, Lija Athletic FC, Pietà Hotspurs FC, Sliema Wanderers FC, Valletta FC, Gżira United FC, Mosta FC, and Victoria Hotspurs FC.
As he brings down the curtain on an illustrious playing career, Roderick Briffa leaves behind a legacy marked by professionalism, humility, and passion for the game. His journey from local beginnings to national icon will be remembered as one of Maltese football’s finest stories.
