The National Amateur League fixture between Victoria Hotspurs F.C. and San Ġwann F.C., originally scheduled for Friday at 6 pm at the Centenary Stadium, has been postponed due to a scheduling error by the Malta Football Association (MFA).
The Centenary Stadium had already been reserved for the Malta women’s national team friendly against Lebanon, which is set to take place at the same time. The overlap was only discovered earlier this week, leading to confusion among club officials and players preparing for their respective matches.
Sources close to the MFA described the issue as “a clear internal coordination failure” within the competitions department, noting that both domestic and international fixtures were confirmed without cross-referencing venue allocations. The mistake has caused frustration among the two National Amateur League 1 sides, who were informed of the change at short notice.
Victoria Hotspurs and San Ġwann were initially offered the option to play the match at Mosta Stadium on Friday at 7:30 pm or at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Ħamrun on Saturday; however, both clubs agreed on postponing the match. As of Friday afternoon, the MFA has yet to announce an alternative date for the fixture.
When contacted, some club officials expressed disappointment at the lack of communication, saying that this situation disrupted their logistics and training plans ahead of the weekend. Meanwhile, the Malta women’s friendly against Lebanon will proceed as planned at the Centenary Stadium tonight.
This latest scheduling mishap has raised renewed questions about the MFA’s internal planning and venue management processes, particularly as fixture congestion continues to increase across domestic competitions.
