The Malta Football Association has announced a comprehensive programme of events to celebrate its 125th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the history of Maltese football. The association, which has played a key role in developing the sport on the island, has lined up a series of initiatives aimed at honouring its legacy while also looking ahead to the future.
One of the highlights of the celebrations is the launch of the 125 Years Jubilee Cup, a national competition for both men’s and women’s teams. These tournaments will run throughout the year, culminating in December 2025, providing an opportunity for clubs across Malta to compete at the highest level while commemorating the historic occasion.
Another major development as part of the celebrations is the official opening of a new football centre in Ta’ Qali. This facility is expected to be a state-of-the-art training hub, enhancing the development of Maltese football by offering improved infrastructure for players, coaches, and officials. The centre will play a vital role in the growth of local football, strengthening the country’s potential in both domestic and international competitions.
In an exciting initiative, the MFA will name Malta’s all-time best eleven players in a special event. This selection will involve public participation, allowing fans to vote for the greatest footballers in the nation’s history. The recognition of Malta’s finest talents will serve as a tribute to the players who have left a lasting impact on the sport.
To ensure that the celebrations extend beyond the professional level, the MFA has introduced several community-driven events. These include street football matches to promote grassroots participation, football quizzes for schools to engage young students in learning about the sport and its history, and interactive sessions aimed at fostering a greater connection between fans and the game. These initiatives aim to bring the footballing community together and inspire future generations to embrace the sport.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, a new national team jersey featuring the 125th-anniversary logo will be launched in May 2025. This special-edition kit will make its debut in June when Malta faces Lithuania, symbolising national pride and heritage in a landmark year for the association.

To ensure the success of these events, the MFA has established three dedicated committees responsible for organising the activities. Additionally, former Maltese football stars Brian Said, Michael Mifsud, and Dorianne Theuma have been appointed as official ambassadors for the anniversary celebrations. Their extensive experience and deep connection to the sport make them ideal figures to lead the festivities and engage with the football community.

Speaking about the 125th-anniversary celebrations, MFA President Bjorn Vassallo highlighted the importance of 2025 as a defining year for Maltese football. He emphasised that, alongside the commemorations, the association remains committed to pushing forward in international football, striving for positive results and continued development at all levels of the game.
The MFA’s 125th anniversary is not just a reflection of the rich history of football in Malta but also an opportunity to build a stronger foundation for the future. Through a mix of competitions, community activities, historic recognitions, and facility developments, the association is ensuring that this milestone year is celebrated at every level of the game.
With an exciting calendar of events planned, fans, players, and stakeholders alike can look forward to a year of footballing pride, celebration, and progress as the MFA marks 125 years of passion and dedication to the sport.
