Malta FA responds to Birkirkara FC statement amid player disciplinary dispute

The Malta Football Association has issued a statement following comments made earlier today by Birkirkara FC regarding the inclusion of a player in Malta’s national squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup European qualifiers against Lithuania and the Netherlands.

In its clarification, the Malta FA confirmed that it had been notified by Birkirkara FC about internal disciplinary action taken against one of their senior team players. The player subsequently lodged an appeal with the club, and Birkirkara were formally informed of this appeal on 30 May 2025.

As the case is still under review, the Malta FA stressed that the matter remains sub judice and that ongoing proceedings are yet to be concluded. The association emphasized that any public comments which could potentially influence the outcome of the case should be avoided out of respect for due process.

“The Malta FA will fully respect the regulatory and judicial procedures involved and encourages all parties to do the same,” the statement read.

A date for the appeal hearing has yet to be set, and in the meantime, the Malta FA has confirmed it will not be making any further comment until the disciplinary process is complete.

This development comes just days before Malta’s crucial Group G fixtures, with the national team hosting Lithuania on June 7 before travelling to the Netherlands for a tough away match on June 10.
