Says that age and term limit has to be introduced in the MFCA committee similar to what the MFA introduced in 2021
Long-standing MFCA (Malta Football Coaches Association) committee member Joe Micallef has officially announced that he will not be seeking re-election for the next term, bringing to a close a long chapter of 29 long years dedicated voluntary service within the Malta Football Coaches Association committee.
In a heartfelt message shared during the association’s general meeting, Micallef reflected on his journey and the committee’s collective achievements over the years, which he described as being “tireless and positive,” and documented in the association’s administrative report. However, his message also carried a clear and passionate call for immediate change within the MFCA committee.
“The time has come for the MFCA to take on a new dimension,” Micallef said. “It’s time for new blood to enter and serve as committee members. I will be the first to make space for new coaches. It is time for the MFCA to become relevant.”
Micallef stressed the need for the MFCA to grow in both vision and outreach, pointing to the importance of a professional social media presence and the establishment of a basic website as fundamental steps. He also called attention to the gap between the MFCA and coaches actively working in top local divisions who are not yet part of the association, urging the committee to actively engage with them rather than wait for them to join.
In a pointed critique, Micallef cited the MFCA’s silence following a controversial statement by a Premier League club president, who had made inappropriate remarks about coaches in general on TVMSport programme ‘Il-Kampjonat’ in an attempt to criticize parents involved in his club’s nursery. “This lack of reaction makes us an irrelevant association,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Micallef urged the incoming committee to take bold steps to modernise, including revising the MFCA’s statute in line with MFA regulations. Among his suggestions were the introduction of age limits and term limits for key leadership roles such as President, General Secretary, and Vice President.
Despite stepping down, Micallef affirmed his continued commitment to the MFCA. “Although I will no longer be part of the committee, I will remain a member. I am sure we will continue to meet during future activities. The MFCA will always remain close to my heart,” he concluded.
Joe Micallef’s departure marks the end of an era — but, as he made clear, it also presents an opportunity for fresh leadership and renewed relevance for the MFCA in the years ahead.
