Ħamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli announced during the club’s annual general meeting on Thursday evening that Steve Borg will not be part of the squad next season, as the veteran defender has not been offered a new contract by the Maltese champions.
The 37-year-old joined Ħamrun Spartans in January 2022 from Gżira United and has since played an important role in the team’s recent success. During his time at the club, Borg helped them win three league titles and two Super Cups.
Last season, however, he was hampered by injuries, missing several months of action. He managed to make 11 appearances but was unavailable for the final part of the campaign.
Borg’s latest league title was his eighth in the Maltese Premier League. His career honours also include three FA Trophy wins and eight Super Cup medals.

With new coach Giacomo Modica now in charge, Ħamrun Spartans are aiming to refresh their squad by bringing in younger players as they prepare for both the domestic season and their UEFA club competition qualifiers this summer.
