FIFA president Gianni Infantino is expected to lead a FIFA delegation to Malta on 15 September for the inauguration of the Malta National Football Centre in Ta’ Qali, Malta Sport understands. The detailed programme for Infantino’s visit has not yet been made public.
The National Football Centre has been billed as a flagship development within the Ta’ Qali complex, designed to modernise the national teams’ base and consolidate technical, medical and performance operations under one roof. It stands as a symbol of innovation and progress for Maltese football.
Recent milestones point to the project’s advanced stage, with the complex already used around national-team activities and stakeholder visits in recent months.
Infantino’s trip is also expected to create room for informal networking with Malta FA vice-president Dr Matthew Paris. Malta Sport understands Paris intends to position himself for a run at the Association’s top role, with groundwork expected in 2027 ahead of the next presidential cycle.
Attention has also focused on Ta’ Qali’s showpiece arena. As Malta Sport exclusively reported in April, plans are being prepared for a €60 million redevelopment of the National Stadium to bring it up to UEFA Category 4 standards, with a football-first design that removes the running track and reconfigures the stands to improve sightlines and atmosphere.
These infrastructure moves sit within a longer timeline. In November 2021, then-Head of Infrastructural Projects at the Malta FA, Manuel Cassar, stated that the National Football Centre would cost approximately €11 million, with part-funding from the National Development and Social Fund (NSDF). This project is also supported by the Malta Development Bank (MDB)
Against this backdrop, Infantino’s anticipated inauguration of the National Football Centre would mark an important moment in Maltese football’s modernisation.
