Hibernians legend Louis Theobald passes away aged 86

The death of Louis Theobald, a legend of Hibernians FC, has been announced. He was 86 years old.

Born in Paola, Theobald made his debut for his hometown club, Hibernians, in May 1955 against Sliema Wanderers. During his time at the club, he won one league title and one cup. He was also voted Maltese Player of the Year in 1960. After a few injury-plagued seasons, he moved to third-tier side Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s in 1968.

Theobald was the brother of the late Eddie Theobald, one of Malta’s greatest players, and also part of the same Paola team.

Internationally, Theobald was an elegant half-back who made his debut for Malta in December 1960 in a friendly against Tunisia. He earned a total of 4 caps for his country, with his final international appearance coming in a European Championship qualification match against Denmark in December 1962.
