Maltese football was in mourning on Wednesday afternoon following the news of the passing of former Birkirkara FC President, Victor Zammit.
Zammit played a pivotal role in Birkirkara’s resurgence in the 1990s and early 2000s, guiding the club to 18 domestic titles. More importantly, he helped establish a strong foundation that transformed the Stripes into a competitive force in Maltese football.
In a tribute, Birkirkara FC expressed their sorrow and honoured their former leader:
“Birkirkara FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former Club President, Mr Victor Zammit,” the statement read.
“Mr Zammit served as President from 1998 to 2009 – a period that marked a defining era in the Club’s history. He transformed Birkirkara from a mid-table side into one that could challenge and defeat any team in Malta.
“Under his leadership, the Club secured 18 major honours, including two Premier League titles, four FA Trophies, and five Super Cups. He will always be remembered for leading the Club to its first significant achievements and laying the groundwork for future success.
“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Currently in Moldova for Thursday’s UEFA Conference League match against FC Petrocub, Birkirkara FC announced that their players will wear black armbands in honour of their former President.
maltaport.mt sends its condolences to the family of Mr Zammit.
