Former amateur referee Anthony Grech was spotted at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, where he was seen alongside veteran official Charles Agius, during the much-awaited fixture Hamrun vs Floriana undergoing training in preparation for his new role as a referee observer. Sources close to Maltasport have confirmed, that Grech has completed his observer course and is expected to make his official debut in the coming weeks.
Grech’s transition into an observer role marks a positive step by the Malta Football Association (MFA) Refereeing Department, which has been proactive in bringing experienced referees back into the fold. The return of individuals with a deep passion for the game, such as Grech, underscores the department’s commitment to maintaining high officiating standards and utilising the knowledge and experience of former officials.
The reintroduction of the former referee and football enthusiast Anthony Grech, widely known as “id-Daina.” Renowned for his enduring affection for refereeing, Grech’s return to the sector is seen as an addition to the local refereeing community, as his dedication and enthusiasm are expected to contribute significantly to the development of the next generation of officials.
Looking ahead, there are hopes within the football fraternity that the MFA Refereeing Department will continue to attract and reintegrate more former referees and assistant referees. Notable figures such as Ingmar Spiteri, Philip Agius, and Emanuel Zammit, the latter having officiated at the prestigious 1998 FIFA World Cup, could provide invaluable insights and mentorship to aspiring referees.
Additionally, veteran officials like Charles Zerafa and other respected former referees, who have made substantial contributions to Maltese refereeing in the past, could play a pivotal role in enhancing the standards of officiating by sharing their wealth of experience and knowledge with younger generations.
Maltasport commends the efforts of the MFA Refereeing Department in recognising the value of experience and hopes that such initiatives will continue to strengthen Maltese football officiating. The reintegration of seasoned referees could pave the way for a brighter future for local officiating, ensuring that knowledge and experience are preserved and passed on to future generations of officials.
