As part of the current MatchDay for the 360 Sports Malta Premier, the Challenge League, and the Women’s League, team captains wore specially designed armbands to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed globally on November 25th. This initiative is part of the Sports Unity project, spearheaded by Ħamrun Ħanin.
Despite progress and growing awareness, statistics show that one in three women worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Through Sports Unity, football clubs are joining forces to send a powerful message that there is no longer any room for excuses when it comes to ending violence against women.
Supported by GasanMamo Insurance, Ħamrun Ħanin’s campaign includes impactful video messages from prominent female players, including Malta’s Haley Bugeja, star of Internazionale, urging women to speak out and break the cycle of violence.
The armbands worn during the matches are now being auctioned to raise funds for Dar Merħba Bik, an organization dedicated to helping women affected by domestic violence. Fans and supporters can place their bids until December 19th on https://app.galabid.com/sportsunity_armbands/, with all proceeds going towards the cause.
In a special gesture, the Veterans Malta Football Association has also donated a number of signed armbands, making these unique pieces of memorabilia even more meaningful.
