Julen Lopetegui, the former manager of Spain, Real Madrid and most recently West Ham United, has returned to international football as the new head coach of the Qatar national team. The Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced the appointment on Thursday, confirming that the Spanish tactician has signed a two-year contract to lead the team through the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
In a brief statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the QFA said: “Julen Lopetegui, the coming coach of the national team. He will guide the team throughout the remaining matches of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.”
Lopetegui, 58, replaces fellow Spaniard Luis García, who had only been in charge since December 2024. García oversaw Qatar’s participation in the 26th Gulf Cup, held in Kuwait, but was dismissed following a disappointing run of results that left the 2022 World Cup hosts struggling to maintain momentum in the current qualifying campaign.
This appointment marks Lopetegui’s first return to the international stage since his dramatic departure from the Spain national team just days before the start of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Having led Spain through a successful qualifying campaign—remaining unbeaten in 20 matches—Lopetegui was sacked by the Spanish Football Federation when it emerged he had secretly agreed to take over as Real Madrid manager immediately after the tournament.
His subsequent club career has included spells at Real Madrid, Sevilla, where he won the UEFA Europa League in 2020, and most recently West Ham United. Lopetegui took charge of the Premier League side in mid-2024 but was dismissed after just six months, in January 2025, following a string of poor performances and growing unrest among supporters.
Qatar’s decision to appoint Lopetegui signals a renewed ambition to reassert themselves on the Asian stage after a mixed run of form since hosting the 2022 World Cup. Currently sitting fourth in Group A during the third round of Asian qualifying, Qatar’s chances of automatic qualification for the 2026 finals are slim, as only the top two teams from each group advance directly. However, they remain in contention for a spot in the Asian playoffs, reserved for the third- and fourth-placed teams, offering a potential backdoor route to the expanded 48-team tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Lopetegui’s arrival brings significant experience, having managed at both club and international level and worked with elite squads across Europe. His tactical pedigree, built on a possession-based, high-pressing style, may offer Qatar a fresh approach as they attempt to rebuild their fortunes following their group-stage exit as hosts of the last World Cup.
Though his recent managerial stints have ended in disappointment, Lopetegui remains a well-respected figure within the global football community. His appointment also reflects Qatar’s continued strategy of entrusting European coaches to guide their national team, a trend that dates back to the early 2000s.
The Spanish manager’s first task will be to prepare for Qatar’s remaining qualifiers, where results will determine whether the side can prolong their World Cup journey through the playoff stages. With the clock ticking and expectations rising once again, Lopetegui faces a high-pressure challenge—but also a chance at redemption on football’s biggest stage.
