Formula One heads to Florida this weekend for the fourth running of the Miami Grand Prix, hosted at the Miami International Autodrome around the Hard Rock Stadium. The event marks the sixth round of the 2025 season, which has already delivered a thrilling title fight between McLaren’s young stars and the reigning champion from Red Bull.
The race is again being held under the sprint format, offering fans competitive action across all three days. Saturday’s 100km sprint will be followed by the main race on Sunday, with a start time scheduled for 2000 GMT (1600 local). Drivers will tackle 57 laps of the 5.412km circuit, totalling just over 308 kilometres of high-intensity racing.
McLaren on Top, Mercedes Still Seeking Breakthrough
Oscar Piastri currently leads the drivers’ championship, holding a 10-point advantage over teammate Lando Norris, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen sits just two points further adrift. Piastri has been in formidable form, having won three of the last four races, including back-to-back victories in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. A win in Miami would make him the first driver this season to claim three consecutive wins, and further extend his lead at the top.
McLaren’s form has been exceptional. The team leads the constructors’ standings by a comfortable 77-point margin over Mercedes, with Red Bull trailing a further 22 points behind. Norris, who claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory here in 2024, will be looking to recapture the magic after an inconsistent start to the current campaign.
Mercedes, notably, has never won in Miami — the only venue on the current calendar where the Silver Arrows are yet to triumph. Though rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli has impressed with consistent points finishes, and Lewis Hamilton continues to fight, Miami’s layout and surface conditions may still pose challenges to their setup.
Track profile and conditions
The Miami International Autodrome is a temporary street circuit designed around the home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. It features three straights and 19 corners, allowing top speeds of up to 340kph. The track was resurfaced in 2023, and offers a smooth but demanding surface that becomes especially punishing under the region’s high temperatures and humidity, which exceeded 55°C last year in cockpit conditions.
Strategically, the race has typically been a one-stop affair, with tyre preservation playing a key role due to the thermal degradation. The circuit layout provides overtaking opportunities, particularly at the end of the long straights, making qualifying position important but not decisive.
So far, no driver has won from pole position in Miami. Max Verstappen, who holds the lap record at 1:29.708 (set in 2023), won the first two editions of the race. The pole sitters in previous years include Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez, and Verstappen himself, highlighting how the front row has been shared but not always translated into race wins.
Rookie performances and season milestones
Three of this season’s six rookies have already scored championship points: Andrea Kimi Antonelli for Mercedes, Oliver Bearman for Haas, and Isack Hadjar for Racing Bulls. The other three — Gabriel Bortoleto, Jack Doohan, and Liam Lawson — are still seeking their first points in 2025.
Piastri, meanwhile, has already made history by becoming the first Australian to lead the world championship standings since Mark Webber in 2010. With consistent pace, intelligent tyre management, and rising confidence, he has rapidly become the title favourite.
