Transgender women barred from competing in women’s football in England

Transgender women will no longer be permitted to compete in women’s football in England following a policy change by the Football Association (FA), the governing body announced on Thursday. The decision comes in the wake of a recent ruling by the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court, which determined that only individuals assigned female at birth can be legally defined as women under current equality legislation.

The landmark judgment, delivered on 16 April, has prompted significant debate and concern within the transgender community, while government officials have welcomed it as a step toward legal clarity. The ruling is now directly shaping policy in national sports organisations, with football being one of the first major bodies to respond.

In a statement, the FA confirmed that its existing policy, which had allowed transgender women to participate in the women’s game, will be rescinded from 1 June 2025. The association stated: “The Supreme Court’s ruling on 16 April means that we will be changing our policy. Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women’s football in England, and this policy will be implemented from 1 June 2025.”

Previously, the FA had supported a framework intended to ensure broad participation in the sport, including transgender athletes, in line with international guidelines issued by UEFA and FIFA. The organisation noted that the now-revoked policy had been developed in consultation with legal experts and reflected a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

However, the Supreme Court’s ruling has now set a new legal precedent, compelling national bodies like the FA to revise their frameworks accordingly. The decision has sparked renewed discussions about the intersection of gender identity, fairness, and safety in competitive sport.

As the 1 June implementation date approaches, the FA is expected to issue additional guidance to clubs and leagues across all levels of the women’s game to ensure compliance with the revised eligibility criteria.
