Liverpool were held to a goalless Premier League draw by Leeds United at Anfield, bringing their four match winning run to an end and stopping a 20 match scoring streak in head to head league meetings between the two sides.
Leeds approached the match with confidence and were not intimidated by the Anfield atmosphere, enjoying spells of possession and moving the ball with composure. However, clear chances were limited, with Alisson Becker rarely tested in the opening stages. The visitors started without their leading scorer Dominic Calvert Lewin, who was named among the substitutes.
Liverpool threatened to break the deadlock against the run of play when Florian Wirtz capitalised on a spill from Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri following a shot by Hugo Ekitike. That moment sparked a period of sustained pressure from the hosts as the first half progressed. Despite Liverpool spending long spells in the attacking third, Leeds defensive organisation, particularly from their deep lying back five, restricted clear opportunities.
Leeds invited pressure by sitting deep, which limited their own attacking output. One notable opportunity did arrive when Alisson’s misplaced clearance fell to Ethan Ampadu, but his effort towards an unguarded goal lacked conviction and was recovered by the Liverpool goalkeeper. Shortly afterwards, Liverpool missed a major chance of their own as Ekitike headed wide from close range with the goal at his mercy.
The second half was closely contested, with both teams battling for control in midfield. Jeremie Frimpong and Ilia Gruev were heavily involved on one flank, while Andrew Robertson and James Justin engaged in a physical contest on the opposite side. The match struggled to find rhythm, with few chances created.
Virgil van Dijk came close for Liverpool with a header that drifted narrowly wide, while late efforts from Ekitike and Cody Gakpo failed to seriously trouble Perri. Leeds thought they had taken the lead when Calvert Lewin found the net after being introduced from the bench, but the goal was immediately ruled out for offside.
Liverpool were unable to capitalise on that reprieve and had to settle for a draw. The result means the Reds have lost just once in their last 16 league meetings with Leeds. For the visitors, the point extends their unbeaten run to six matches, although their only away league victory this season remains against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
