Former Juventus and Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny retires from football

Former Juventus and Arsenal goakeeper Wojciech Szczesny has declared his retirement from the world of professional football at the age of 34.

Throughout his illustrious 15-year career, he won 11 trophies in both England and Italy.

Szczesny represented Poland on 84 occasions following his introduction to the senior team in 2009. He participated in two out of three matches for his country during the recent European Championship, marking his seventh appearance in a major international tournament.

Just a few weeks ago, Szczesny and Juventus reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract one year ahead of schedule. Talks were underway for the Poland international’s transfer to Saudi Arabian outfit Al Nassr earlier this summer, but negotiations fell through.

Szczesny featured for both Juventus and Roma in the Serie A, accumulating a total of 272 appearances in Italy’s premier league after his eight year spell with Arsenal.

In 2017, he made a permanent move to Turin for a transfer fee of €18 million, following a successful two-year loan spell at the Stadio Olimpico.

Initially serving as Gigi Buffon’s understudy, Szczesny eventually took over as the first-choice goalkeeper for Juventus in the 2018-19 season, as Buffon departed to join PSG.

During his time at the Allianz Stadium, Szczesny secured eight trophies, including three Serie A titles.

At the start of the 2024-25 season, with one year remaining on his contract with Juventus, Szczesny mutually terminated the agreement on August 14, 2024. Just two weeks later, he confirmed his retirement from professional football.
