Welbeck double sinks Liverpool at the Amex

Brighton inflicted a third successive Premier League defeat on Liverpool, beating Arne Slot’s side 2-1 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, leaving the Reds at serious risk of dropping out of the top four race.

Danny Welbeck was the hero for Brighton, scoring twice to become the outright top English scorer in the Premier League this season with 11 goals. His first came from a headed cross by Diego Gómez, nodding in at the far post. His second, just after the hour mark, was a simple tap-in after Jack Hinshelwood cushioned a Yankuba Minteh cross perfectly into his path, surviving a lengthy VAR check for offside.

Liverpool had equalised between the two Welbeck goals through a moment of individual brilliance from Milos Kerkez, who pounced on a dreadful Lewis Dunk backpass and dinked the ball beautifully over goalkeeper Verbruggen to make it 1-1.

But that was as good as it got for Liverpool, who looked toothless throughout, particularly in the second half. The absence of Mohamed Salah and an early injury to Hugo Ekitike left them without a clear focal point up front, and Brighton were good value for their win.

Liverpool now risk ending the weekend five points off the top four. Brighton climb into eighth.
