Vardy leads Leicester to victory as Van Nistelrooy makes winning start

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City tenure began in style with a 3-1 win over struggling West Ham at the King Power Stadium. Jamie Vardy’s early strike set the tone as the Foxes moved four points clear of the relegation zone, while West Ham’s Julen Lopetegui faced increased pressure after another disappointing result.

It took less than two minutes for Leicester to break the deadlock. Jamie Vardy latched onto a clever pass from Bilal El Khannouss and calmly slotted the ball past Lukasz Fabianski into the bottom corner. The goal lifted the hosts and piled immediate pressure on West Ham, whose defensive frailties were exposed from the outset.

Despite the early setback, West Ham dominated much of the first half but failed to capitalise on their chances. Jarrod Bowen forced three smart saves from Mads Hermansen, while Danny Ings saw his header come back off the post.

The Hammers thought they had equalised when Crysencio Summerville’s miscued effort looped into the net following a challenge on Hermansen. However, referee Josh Smith ruled it out for a foul by Tomas Soucek, much to the frustration of the away fans.

Leicester punished West Ham’s profligacy in the second half. El Khannouss stretched to meet Kasey McAteer’s cross and guided the ball into the bottom corner to double the Foxes’ lead. Van Nistelrooy’s men continued to show defensive resolve, with Conor Coady making a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Bowen after an excellent pullback.

Patson Daka added a third for Leicester in stoppage time with a stunning strike from the edge of the box. West Ham managed a consolation goal through Niclas Füllkrug, who headed in after Summerville flicked on Bowen’s corner, but it was too little, too late.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was delighted with his team’s energy and determination, acknowledging that there is still room for improvement.

“I’m very happy. Three points, three goals, and great effort from the team,” he said. “West Ham had their chances, and that’s something we need to work on, but the spirit and togetherness were there.”

For Julen Lopetegui, the pressure continues to mount. With just two wins in their last 11 matches and rumours swirling about his potential replacement, the West Ham manager faces a crucial test against Wolves next week

Leicester will look to build on this momentum as Van Nistelrooy aims to steer the Foxes clear of danger. Meanwhile, West Ham must address their defensive frailties and wastefulness in front of goal if they are to climb out of their current slump.
