Bayern Munich knocked out of DFB Pokal

Bayern Munich’s DFB Pokal journey came to an abrupt end after a 1-0 defeat to rivals Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena. Nathan Tella’s 69th-minute strike was enough to send Leverkusen through, but the game’s defining moment came in the first half when Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off for a last-man foul on Jeremie Frimpong.

In an incident that shocked fans, Neuer received the first red card of his illustrious career after 864 games. Attempting to stop Frimpong from a clear scoring opportunity outside the box, Neuer’s mistimed challenge left referee Harm Osmers with little choice.

“Being sent off hurt,” Neuer admitted after the game. “It was a mistake. I was hoping for an offside, but I can’t change it now. I have to accept it.”

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany was forced to adjust immediately, bringing on backup goalkeeper Daniel Peretz and sacrificing Leroy Sané.

Despite being a man down, Bayern dominated much of the game, boasting 58% possession and outshooting Leverkusen 14 to 11. Their pressing and composure on the ball made it seem, at times, as though they were the team with the numerical advantage.

Kompany praised his side’s resilience stating that “the first feeling is disappointment we won’t win the Pokal this season. But the second feeling is pride. The performance was special. With ten men, we didn’t just sit back; we played positively. If we keep this level, we’ll win plenty of games.”

Captain Joshua Kimmich echoed his manager’s sentiments but highlighted Bayern’s ongoing struggles in key moments.

“The red card wasn’t the crucial poin it’s no excuse. We were dominant and created chances but failed to take them. In games like this, you have to make the most of set pieces and defend better in key situations.”

The defeat adds to a worrying trend for Bayern: a lack of goals in crucial games. Star striker Harry Kane missed the match due to a muscle injury, but the Rekordmeister’s struggles in attack have been evident even with the Englishman on the pitch.

In their last six games across all competitions, Bayern have only scored more than once on one occasion a 3-0 win over Augsburg. Other results include narrow 1-0 victories over Benfica, PSG, and St. Pauli, as well as a 1-1 draw against Dortmund.

Despite their Pokal exit, the atmosphere around Bayern under Vincent Kompany remains optimistic. The team has shown defensive improvements and a more positive style of play compared to last season, but converting chances remains an issue.

Bayern currently trail their Bundesliga pace from last year under Thomas Tuchel and have suffered two losses in the Champions League group stage. Still, Kompany’s leadership and tactical adjustments have created a sense of belief within the squad.

With the first title of the season out of reach, Bayern’s focus will shift to the Bundesliga and Champions League. While the defeat to Leverkusen is a blow, the performance showed promise, and Kompany remains confident his team is heading in the right direction.

“We’re on the right path,” Kimmich concluded. “It’s about learning from these games and finding solutions. The potential is there.”

For Bayern, success in the second half of the season will depend on turning potential into trophies. As the season progresses, the Rekordmeister will need to find the killer instinct to convert dominance into victories when it matters most.
