Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is now out of an induced coma after undergoing surgery for a ruptured intestine, according to British media.
The Nigerian international suffered the injury during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City in the Premier League. In the 88th minute, he collided with the goalpost. Although he received treatment on the pitch, he returned to play but was clearly limping for the rest of the match.
Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo later explained that a mix-up between the medical and coaching teams led to Awoniyi staying on the pitch.
On Tuesday, the club said Awoniyi was recovering well after surgery, though they have not made further comments since.
The 27-year-old’s condition has raised concerns, but reports suggest he is now in a stable state as he begins his recovery.
