Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has been handed a five-match stadium ban after being found guilty of improper conduct for spitting in the direction of match officials. The incident occurred following Forest’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Fulham on September 28.
An independent regulatory commission ruled that Marinakis’s behavior was an “egregious display of disrespect” that could encourage further disrespect towards officials. During the incident, referee Josh Smith and his assistants reported seeing Marinakis spit as they walked past him in the tunnel.
In his defense, Marinakis claimed the action was unintentional, attributing it to a hacking cough exacerbated by his smoking habit. However, the commission dismissed this argument, noting that none of the officials mentioned coughing and that CCTV footage did not support his account. They concluded that Marinakis had “deliberately spat” as an act of contempt.
In addition to Marinakis, Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo and midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White received penalties for their misconduct during a 2-2 draw against Brighton on September 22. Nuno was given a three-match touchline ban after receiving a red card, while Gibbs-White received a one-match ban for swearing at officials.

Both Nuno and Gibbs-White expressed remorse, which was considered in the commission’s decisions. However, Nuno’s history of prior disciplinary issues influenced the length of his ban.
Marinakis’s ban underscores ongoing concerns about player and official conduct in football, highlighting the need for respect within the sport.
