Manchester United made it three home Premier League wins in a row for the first time in over two years with a confident 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.
New signing Senne Lammens made his debut in goal for United, but it was Sunderland’s keeper Robin Roefs who was busiest early on. He made several important saves but couldn’t stop Mason Mount from scoring in the eighth minute, Mount fired into the bottom corner from just inside the box after a pass from Bryan Mbeumo.
United kept pushing, with Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, and Mbeumo all going close. Roefs did well to tip Bruno’s powerful shot onto the bar, but eventually, United got their second. Benjamin Šeško volleyed home from close range after Sunderland failed to deal with Diogo Dalot’s long throw, his second goal in two games.
Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris tried to change things before half-time, bringing on defender Dan Ballard. The visitors briefly improved, with Granit Xhaka forcing Lammens into a save and Ballard heading wide from a corner. But they offered little threat after the break.
Eliezer Mayenda shot over late on and Chemsdine Talbi was denied by Lammens, but Sunderland couldn’t find a way back.
The win also keeps Manchester United’s 25-game unbeaten run against promoted teams in the league alive. Despite the result, Sunderland still sit one point ahead of United after just their second loss of the season.
