Manchester United look to pile pressure on top four as struggling Wolves visit Old Trafford

Manchester United will look to keep their push for a top-four finish going when they host Wolves at Old Trafford. Wolves, meanwhile, are heading towards what could be the worst season in Premier League history.

United come into the match after a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day. It was their first league win without Bruno Fernandes since March 2022 and moved them to within five points of the top four. Under Ruben Amorim, United appear to have moved away from a back-three system, and their recent form has improved, with just two defeats in their last 12 league games. They have also been strong at home, losing only once at Old Trafford since the opening weekend of the season.

Wolves are struggling badly and arrive in Manchester after another defeat, this time a 2-1 loss away to Liverpool. That result left them with just two points from 18 league matches, a new low in top-flight English football. It was also their 11th straight Premier League defeat. While they have lost six consecutive away games, Wolves have at least kept things tight recently, losing by just one goal against Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

United have enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings, including a 4-1 win away at Wolves earlier this month. Wolves did win 1-0 at Old Trafford last season, but they have not won back-to-back league matches away to United since 1961.

Benjamin Šeško could be key for United, having scored four of his last five club goals before half-time. For Wolves, young forward Mateus Mané impressed on his first Premier League start at Anfield and is likely to play without fear again.

United remain short of players due to injury, while Wolves will be without André, who is suspended. With Wolves struggling for goals and United missing attacking options, a low-scoring game could be on the cards.
