Manchester United held to goalless draw by Aston Villa

Chelsea came from behind to get a point against Nottingham Forest

Manchester United played out a tense goalless draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park, alleviating some pressure on manager Erik ten Hag in front of part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, on Matchday 7 of the English Premier League.

Following disappointing defensive performances against Tottenham and Porto, Ten Hag made the decision to drop Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez in favour of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans. This tactical shift resulted in a more solid defensive display, although United struggled to create opportunities in attack.

Maguire had to leave the pitch with a leg injury at half-time, but the 36-year-old Evans continued to impress. Villa, still showing signs of fatigue from their recent Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, found it challenging to penetrate United’s defence.

In the first half, Morgan Rogers narrowly missed the target, and Youri Tielemans forced a save from United goalkeeper Andre Onana after the break. However, it was United who came closest to scoring when Bruno Fernandes, back in the squad after his red card against Spurs was overturned, struck a free-kick against the crossbar.

The match finally opened up during stoppage time, with Diogo Dalot making a crucial goal-line clearance from Jaden Philogene. Alejandro Garnacho also saw a potential assist to Fernandes intercepted during a United counterattack.

This draw extends United’s winless streak to five games across all competitions, marking their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, with just eight points from seven matches. Nevertheless, the result may provide Ten Hag with a temporary reprieve as the team heads into the international break. United currently sit in 14th place, while Villa remains in fifth, three points behind third-placed Arsenal.

In a separate fixture, Chelsea could only manage a draw against 10-man Nottingham Forest, ending their streak of five consecutive victories. With Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool all winning on Saturday, Chelsea had an opportunity to close the gap on the leading teams.

A win would have put Chelsea just two points behind Liverpool, whom they are set to face after the international break. However, the youthful Chelsea side may still be too early in their development to pose a serious challenge for the title this season.

Under the management of Enzo Maresca, Chelsea had scored 16 goals in their previous four matches but found it difficult to break down a resolute Nottingham Forest side. Forest, having lost only once in the Premier League this season, fought hard for every ball and proved tough to break down.

After taking the lead shortly after half-time through Chris Wood, who capitalised on a free-kick, Nottingham Forest put Chelsea’s defensive vulnerabilities on display. However, Noni Madueke equalised with a well-placed shot, raising the spirits of the Chelsea supporters as both teams settled for a point.
