Coco Gauff clinches second title of the season at China Open

Coco Gauff secured her second season title with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over Karolina Muchova in the final of the China Open on Sunday.

At just 20 years old, the sixth-ranked American became the youngest champion of the China Open in 14 years. She is now the second American to win the title in Beijing, joining the ranks of Serena Williams, who won in 2004 and 2013.

This victory marks Gauff’s eighth career title, improving her record in tour finals to 8-1 and extending her impressive streak to 7-0 in hard-court finals—a feat unprecedented in the Open Era.

Having previously defended her Auckland title this season, Gauff made a swift start, taking the opening set in a mere 31 minutes. She faced minimal challenges on her serve, dropping only five points, hitting 24 winners, and breaking Muchova five times.

Gauff’s triumph in Beijing also enhances her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals, which features the top eight players, for the third consecutive year. With this title, she will surpass Jessica Pegula to claim the No. 5 spot ahead of the season’s final WTA 1000 tournament, the Wuhan Open, which begins on Monday.
