Liverpool continued their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 win over rivals Everton at Anfield. It’s only the third time in Premier League history that the Reds have won their first five matches.
Unlike recent games where Liverpool have left it late, this time they came out firing. Just 12 minutes in, Mohamed Salah played a lovely ball through to Ryan Gravenberch, who calmly lifted it over Jordan Pickford to give the hosts an early lead. Liverpool stayed on the front foot and nearly made it 2-0 soon after, with Salah almost scoring himself from the edge of the area.
Everton struggled to get going in the first half but did have a chance when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall failed to take advantage of a good move started by Jack Grealish. Moments later, Liverpool punished them. Gravenberch turned provider, slipping a perfect pass to Hugo Ekitike, who slid the ball past Pickford for 2-0.
Liverpool almost handed Everton a way back just before half-time when Alisson’s poor pass was intercepted. Iliman Ndiaye crossed to Beto, but the striker couldn’t finish under pressure.
After the break, Liverpool seemed a bit nervous and started giving the ball away too easily. Everton took advantage just before the hour mark when Idrissa Gana Gueye fired a superb shot into the far corner after a nice setup from Ndiaye.
The game opened up after that, with chances at both ends. Liverpool were nearly pegged back, but Jack Grealish made a crucial goal-line block to stop Ibrahima Konaté’s header. Everton pushed hard in the final minutes, but lacked the finishing touch to grab an equaliser.
In the end, Liverpool held on for their 18th home win over Everton in their last 29 meetings. The result keeps them top of the table and brings Everton’s four-match unbeaten run to an end. Once again, the bragging rights belong to the red half of Merseyside.
