Forest stun Spurs to take major step away from relegation zone

Nottingham Forest produced a commanding display to beat fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in north London, deepening Spurs’ relegation worries and extending Forest’s recent dominance in this fixture.

Despite the importance of the occasion, it was Forest who settled faster, while Tottenham struggled to turn early intent into real control. Spurs did come close through Richarlison, whose header flashed across goal from a Mathys Tel corner, before Kevin Danso’s long throw almost brought an own goal when Igor Jesus headed against his own post.

The home side saw more of the ball for much of the first half, but chances remained limited in a tense contest shaped more by fear of losing than real attacking freedom. Just when Tottenham looked set to reach the break level, Forest struck a huge blow. From Neco Williams’ corner, Jesus rose highest at the far post and guided a header back across goal and into the net to give the visitors the lead.

Forest nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half when Williams again found space at the far post, but his header was comfortably dealt with by Guglielmo Vicario. Tottenham’s anxiety was growing, and it became even worse when Forest found a second goal.

Callum Hudson Odoi did the damage down the flank, beating his man and cutting the ball back into the area, where Morgan Gibbs-White finished from close range to leave Spurs with a mountain to climb.

The hosts never truly looked capable of mounting a comeback. A Pape Matar Sarr volley that was blocked by Ibrahim Sangare was about as close as they came to pulling one back, with Forest continuing to look the sharper and more composed side.

Any hopes of a response were ended in the closing stages when Taiwo Awoniyi turned in another delivery from Williams to wrap up an emphatic 3-0 victory and seal a precious three points for Forest.

The defeat leaves Tottenham in even greater danger near the bottom of the Premier League table, while Forest takes a significant step towards safety after a huge win in a direct relegation battle.
