Dortmund prepared a new contract for the experienced defender

Borussia Dortmund footballer Mats Hummels has extended his contract with the club for another year.

Hummels’ contract expired on June 30, and the 34-year-old defender will remain in Dortmund until the end of next season after signing a new contract.

“I did not make the decision easily. I weighed for a long time, and now at the end of the season, I can say: ‘I am ready for another year,'” Hummels said in the club’s press release.

He played 37 games this season and replaced Mark Reus as captain.

Ahead of the last round in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund is first in the table with 70 points, two more than the current champion Bayern Munich and in case of victory against Mainz on Saturday at home, they will win the first title since 2012.

Bayern will play away from home against Cologne.

“I did not make the decision easily. I weighed for a long time, and now at the end of the season I can say: ‘I am ready for another year,'” Hummels said in the club’s press release.
