Brentford secured a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 away victory over Macclesfield. The tie was decided in the second half by an own goal from Sam Heathcote.
Macclesfield, who compete in the sixth tier, had eliminated holders Crystal Palace in the previous round and produced another organised display against Premier League opposition. The hosts limited Brentford’s opportunities during the first half and created chances of their own.
Brentford forward Reiss Nelson was denied from close range by goalkeeper Max Dearnley, who produced several saves to keep the scores level. At the other end, James Dawson came close for Macclesfield with a long range effort that went just wide of the target.
After the interval, Brentford increased their attacking pressure. Dearnley reacted quickly to stop a close range header from Kaye Furo. The decisive moment came in the 70th minute when Aaron Hickey delivered a cross into the area and Heathcote, attempting to clear, headed the ball into his own net.
