Brentford beat Sheffield Wednesday on penalties to reach quarter finals of Carabao Cup

Brentford secured a Carabao Cup quarter-final spot for the third time in five seasons, prevailing over Sheffield Wednesday in a nail-biting penalty shootout. As Thomas Frank led his team in celebration, it was clear the Danish manager was more focused on the triumph at hand than any missed opportunity at Manchester United.

Frank’s satisfaction, however, was tempered by the knowledge that his team’s evening was far from comfortable. Brentford initially took charge with a well-placed early goal from Kevin Schade, but their momentum faded after halftime, allowing their Championship opponents a chance to fight back.

Wednesday, sitting four points outside the playoffs, appeared vulnerable after manager Danny Röhl rotated nine players ahead of their weekend clash with Watford. They were unsteady in the first half, disorganized in defense, and lacked flow, yet they clawed their way back with a fiery equalizer from Djeidi Gassama in the 57th minute.

With Brentford struggling to regain rhythm, the game drifted into penalties, where Frank’s men finally found their composure. Brentford’s spot-kicks—delivered by Bryan Mbeumo, Keane Lewis-Potter, Mikkel Damsgaard, Yoane Wissa, and Vitaly Janelt—were perfectly executed, leaving Wednesday’s 19-year-old keeper, Pierce Charles, little chance. “Five very good penalties,” Frank noted, while Brentford keeper Mark Flekken’s key save on Liam Palmer’s fifth attempt sealed the win.

Reflecting on his side’s spirited but ultimately unsuccessful fight, Röhl admitted, “We had to make changes for our schedule, but I’m proud of the team’s resilience.” With Brentford now one step closer to Wembley, Frank’s focus will undoubtedly shift to maintaining their form as the competition intensifies.
