S.L. Benfica have provisionally suspended five supporters after alleged racist comments during their recent UEFA Champions League fixture against Real Madrid.
The incident occurred during the first leg of the tie on 17 February, which Real Madrid won. The match was temporarily halted for approximately 10 minutes following alleged racial abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian forward scored the winning goal before the interruption.
Benfica confirmed on Friday that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against five members. In a statement, the club said, “Benfica informs they have suspended five members and cancelled their red passes following the initiation of disciplinary proceedings which may lead to the maximum sanction provided in the statutes, expulsion.”
The club reiterated its position on discrimination, adding, “Benfica reaffirm it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to act firmly whenever behaviours that undermine the values of the club, sport and society are involved.”
Real Madrid progressed to the last 16 with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Benfica following the second leg.
The case highlights ongoing efforts within European football to address discrimination and enforce disciplinary measures when allegations arise.
