American Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley was tasered and arrested by police after a confrontation with officers in Miami, Florida.
The 29-year-old, who won a bronze medal in the 100m at last summer’s Paris Olympics, faces charges of battery, resisting arrest, and disturbing the peace after the incident on Thursday evening.
Officers were investigating a separate matter when Kerley approached them, apparently worried about his car, and acted aggressively, according to a police report.
The report says Kerley “continued to resist” and tried to avoid being arrested before four officers took him to the ground.
Bodycam footage shows Kerley getting back up, being tasered, and falling back to the ground before being taken into custody.
Local media in Miami reported that Kerley appeared in court on Friday and has since been released on bail.
His lawyer described the situation as a “total misunderstanding.”
In addition to his bronze in Paris, Kerley won a silver in the 100m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and a gold at the 2022 World Championships. He has also earned gold in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, and he holds the sixth-fastest 100m time ever, with a personal best of 9.76 seconds.
