ICMG ExCo members warmly welcome Alicante's bid for 2031 Mediterranean Games

The ICMG Executive Committee meeting in Taranto was a success, marking an important step in the growth of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games. ICMG President Davide Tizzano welcomed the Executive Committee members and thanked them for their efforts in supporting the values of the Mediterranean Games. In his speech, he highlighted the increasing recognition of the ICMG within the global Olympic movement, noting that this growing acknowledgment shows how important the Mediterranean Games are for promoting unity, cultural exchange, and excellence in sport across the region.

The Secretary General, Iakovos Filippousis, gave an update on ICMG activities since the Paris 2024 Olympics. He pointed out the organisation’s ongoing growth, the active participation of its NOC members, a new branding and commercial rights strategy, the digitalisation of all operations, and the growing interest in hosting the Mediterranean Beach Games. He also mentioned a new law passed by the Parliament of Kosovo, which sets up the legal framework for the OCMG Prishtina2030 and the Games’ organisation.

The ICMG Executive Committee unanimously approved the 2023 Financial Statements, which were audited by I&G Audit (appointed by the ICMG General Assembly in 2023). The audit confirmed that the ICMG’s finances are in good shape, showing a significant surplus for the fifth consecutive year. The Audit Report will be presented for approval at the ICMG General Assembly in September 2025.

Ms. Raquel Hernández Carbonell presented Alicante’s bid to host the 2031 Mediterranean Beach Games on behalf of the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Municipality of Alicante. Her detailed proposal was well received and approved by the Executive Committee members. The final decision on Alicante’s bid, as the only candidate city for the 5th edition of the Mediterranean Beach Games, will be announced at the ICMG General Assembly in 2025. The Executive Committee also announced the creation of the 2031 Mediterranean Beach Games Evaluation Commission, which will visit Alicante in spring 2025 and present its report to the General Assembly.

The Presidents of the Coordination Commissions for the upcoming Mediterranean Games also presented their reports, sharing progress updates and discussing challenges. Reports from other ICMG commissions, covering plans and initiatives to promote sport in the Mediterranean region, were also submitted and approved.

Finally, Mr. Stratos Karetos reported on the strong performance of Mediterranean NOCs at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, noting a remarkable increase in both medals won and the number of athletes who participated.
