Nigeria began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Tanzania. The result extended Nigeria’s strong record against Tanzania, as they remain unbeaten in nine matches.
After missing out on the last World Cup, Nigeria knew they needed a good start in Morocco. They started well and created early chances, with Akor Adams forcing a save and later hitting the crossbar with a header.
Tanzania had a brief spell of pressure, but Nigeria continued to look dangerous. Victor Osimhen went close before Semi Ajayi scored the opening goal, heading in Alex Iwobi’s corner to give Nigeria a deserved lead.
Just before half-time, Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba made important saves to keep his team in the game. Those saves mattered, as Tanzania equalised early in the second half when Charles M’Mombwa finished well from close range.
Nigeria responded quickly. Ademola Lookman scored the winning goal with a fine shot from outside the box, putting Nigeria back in front only two minutes later.
Nigeria pushed for a third goal, but Foba made more good saves. Tanzania nearly grabbed a late equaliser, but missed their best chance. Nigeria stayed strong at the back and held on for the win.
