Sadio Mané struck a decisive late winner to send Senegal into the Africa Cup of Nations final, as the reigning champions overcame Egypt 1–0 in a tense semi-final encounter.
In a repeat of the 2021 AFCON final, the Lions of Teranga once again proved too strong for the Pharaohs, extending an impressive run of form that has now seen Senegal win 11 of their last 12 matches against African opposition.
The first half was short on clear-cut chances, though Senegal largely controlled proceedings. Egypt failed to register a single attempt on goal before the break, while Mohamed El Shenawy dealt comfortably with efforts from Habib Diarra and Pape Gueye. Nicolas Jackson also wasted a promising opportunity, firing over from a good position.
Senegal were dealt a blow midway through the half when captain Kalidou Koulibaly was forced off through injury. Both Koulibaly and Diarra had earlier been booked, meaning they would have missed the final had Senegal failed to progress.
The pattern of the match remained unchanged after the restart, with Senegal continuing to dominate possession and territory but finding it difficult to break down a disciplined Egyptian defence. Long-range efforts became the main outlet, with substitute Lamine Camara among those testing El Shenawy from distance.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 78th minute when the ball fell kindly to Mané on the edge of the area. The Senegal captain produced a composed finish to register his 11th AFCON goal, drawing level with Mohamed Salah and recording his fifth goal contribution of the tournament.
Egypt offered little in response and rarely threatened an equaliser, managing just one shot on target throughout the match. Senegal, by contrast, closed out the contest with authority to secure their place in the final for the third time in their last five AFCON appearances.
The result denied Egypt what would have been a 10th Africa Cup of Nations final, while Senegal now move one step closer to retaining their continental crown.
