Wilfred Sultana claims Commodore’s Award 2023

By Arnold Farrugia

The Malta Cruising Club held its annual Commodore’s Dinner this year at the Terrace Restaurant of the Westin Dragonara Resort on Saturday 2nd December 2023.  The event was partly sponsored by Falken Tyre Europe, represented in Malta by Standard Limited of Santa Venera.

The Commodore of the Club, Johann J. Cuschieri announced that the trophy for 2023 is being awarded to the well know local sportswriter and promoter, Wilfred Sultana.

Wilfred Sultana was for a number of years a member of the Committee of the Malta Cruising Club and also served as the Commodore of the Club between 2015 and 2022. He was also present on the day the Club was founded in 2005 in a meeting held by the late Prof. Anthony Debono, the founder of the Club and a few other friends .  As a very active sport journalist then, Sultana managed to interview Profs Debono shortly after that meeting.

The Commodore’s Award, introduced in 2011, is presented annually to that member who has given a special service to the Club and its members.

In his announcement, Commodore Johann J Cuschieri said that;  “The winner of this year’s Commodore’s Award never owned a boat but his contribution to the boating industry  and sport,  over the past fifty years, has been outstanding.  Wilfred Sultana is indeed worthy of this recognition”.

For Wilfred Sultana this is not the first award bestowed upon him. In his long and active carrier there were many occasions where local and international publishers, sports journalist associations as well as Yacht Clubs recognised the dedication of Wilfred Sultana to the boating community by granting him official awards.

The previous winners of  Commodore’s Award were David Dingli (2011), Austin Calleja (2013), Pierre Aquilina (2017), Patrick & Nadine Genovese (2018), John Cini (2019), Dr Carmel Abela (2020), Dott. Ing. Luigi Tussellino (2021) and  Winston Urpani (2022).

In his address, prior to announcing the winner of the Commodore’s Award for 2023, Commodore  Johann J. Cuschieri referred to the Club’s activities held in 2023 and also announced some planned events for the first six months of 2024.   He also announced that the Malta Cruising Club has been accepted as a full member of the Malta Sailing Federation starting from January 2024.
