Chelsea maintained their hopes of finishing in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League league phase after a 1-0 victory against Pafos at Stamford Bridge, extending their unbeaten home run in the competition to 15 matches.
The Blues had entered the match needing wins in their remaining league phase fixtures to secure a top-eight finish following their defeat to Atalanta. Against a Pafos side still in contention for a play-off spot, Chelsea controlled possession and territory during the opening half. Their first shot came in the 11th minute when Pedro Neto cut inside but fired over the crossbar. Reece James curled an effort just wide shortly afterwards, while Enzo Fernández’s header was ruled out for a push on Derrick Luckassen.
Pafos’ first real chance arrived midway through the half when Jajá’s strike deflected off James and hit the post. Chelsea responded with a series of threats, including Moisés Caicedo being denied by Jay Gorter, Benoît Badiashile heading past the post from Alejandro Garnacho’s cross, and further saves required from Gorter to deny Jorrel Hato and Caicedo.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Chelsea dominating possession. Estêvão, the Brazilian teenager, impressed after his introduction but was denied by Gorter, while Neto and Caicedo continued to test the Pafos goalkeeper. The Cypriot side defended resolutely, with Derrick Luckassen producing a key last-ditch block to keep Chelsea at bay.
Chelsea eventually broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. From a total of thirteen corners, Caicedo headed home to give the hosts a crucial lead. Pafos pressed late for an equaliser but were unable to score, leaving them on six points ahead of their final league phase match against Slavia Praha.
The victory marks Chelsea’s third under head coach Liam Rosenior, who will now aim for another crucial result against Napoli in their final group game to secure a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the knockout phase.
