Chelsea Nears Deal with Mauricio Pochettino as Next Head Coach

After a tumultuous season that saw Chelsea drop to 12th place in the Premier League, the club is reportedly in the final stages of securing Mauricio Pochettino as its next head coach.

The Argentine, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, has been the top candidate since the selection process began, according to 90min. The club’s owners are said to have held discussions over the weekend, with only minor details left to be finalized before an official announcement is made later this week.

If the deal goes through, Pochettino is expected to have a major say in which players will be allowed to leave Chelsea in the summer. The club needs to make major cutbacks to reduce playing numbers and boost its position with FFP, following a £121m loss and spending over £600m across two transfer windows. In recent days, Trevoh Chalobah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Mateo Kovacic have all been linked with moves away from Chelsea, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang possibly leaving on a free transfer.

Meanwhile, caretaker boss Frank Lampard will be hoping to end the team’s five-game losing streak when they face off against London rivals Arsenal on Tuesday evening.

While there has been speculation that Pochettino may be in attendance, it remains to be seen whether he will attend given the importance of the match. Nevertheless, Chelsea fans will be eagerly anticipating the confirmation of their new manager, as the club looks to turn its fortunes around next season.
