Barbora Krejcikova, the current Wimbledon champion, has had to pull out of the Eastbourne tournament due to pain in her thigh.
The 29-year-old from the Czech Republic had made it to the quarter-finals at Devonshire Park after tough wins against British players Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage, saving match points in both matches.
“I’m really sorry I have to withdraw from my quarter-final in Eastbourne today because I’m feeling some discomfort in my right thigh,” Krejcikova said on social media. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here this past week and it’s been great to be back playing on grass.”
Even though she seemed to be moving fine during her match against Burrage, Krejcikova has decided to rest and recover fully before Wimbledon starts on Tuesday.
Her withdrawal means that French qualifier Varvara Gracheva goes straight into the semi-finals.
