Swiatek makes comeback to defeat Osaka in second-round clash at French Open

Reigning champion Iga Swiatek staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Naomi Osaka in a thrilling second-round clash at the French Open, narrowly escaping what could have been her earliest departure from Roland Garros as she fended off a match point. The fervent crowd, which faced criticism on Wednesday, was treated to an intense contest on court Philippe Chatrier. Persistent rain had led to the cancellation of matches on the outer courts, and although many spectators had already sought refuge at home, the two four-time Grand Slam winners delivered an unforgettable duel.

“The intensity of this match was far beyond what I anticipated for a second-round encounter. I’ll be better prepared next time. Naomi showcased some incredible tennis with a relaxed grip,” remarked Swiatek, the champion in 2020, 2022, and 2023, following her 7-6(1) 1-6 7-5 triumph.

Swiatek averted a set point and then dominated the tiebreak, but Osaka, returning to the French Open post-maternity leave since 2022, gave it her all.

Launching an array of stunning shots, the 26-year-old dominated the second set and seemed unstoppable in the deciding set, until she succumbed to the pressure. Holding a 5-2 lead, she dropped all the remaining games as her winners turned into sometimes glaring unforced errors. Serving for the match at 5-3, Osaka netted a straightforward forehand and misfired another one on match point.

By that time, Swiatek was fully energised and seized the opportunity, ensuring she could fight another day in Paris and extending her winning streak to 14 matches after her triumphs in Madrid and Rome.
