Russian teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva produced a career-defining performance on Thursday, securing a stunning 6-3, 6-3 victory over world number two Iga Swiatek to advance to the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Championships. The 17-year-old, seeded 12th, showcased remarkable composure and attacking prowess to notch her first-ever win against the Polish star, marking a significant milestone in her young career.
With the victory, Andreeva moves into her maiden WTA 1000 semi-final, further solidifying her growing reputation on the tour. Her achievement also makes her the youngest semi-finalist in Dubai since the tournament’s inception in 2001, an impressive turnaround from her previous appearance, where she suffered a first-round exit.
Despite her nerves leading up to the match, Andreeva displayed immense confidence on court. Reflecting on her preparation, she acknowledged Swiatek’s dominance in their previous encounter in Cincinnati but emphasized her belief in maintaining an aggressive style of play.
“Honestly, I was nervous before the match, and we played in Cincinnati last year, which was pretty intense,” Andreeva said. “I just told myself that I played great and needed to continue to play aggressively and go for my shots.”
Andreeva initially faced difficulties holding serve in her opening service game but quickly settled into the contest. Breaking Swiatek early in the first set, she showcased her ability to read her opponent’s game, covering the court efficiently and capitalizing on key moments. A powerful forehand return down the line sealed the set in her favour, setting the tone for the remainder of the match.
The second set saw Andreeva briefly trailing 3-1, but a crucial discussion with her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, helped her reset. From there, the Russian displayed remarkable resilience, winning five consecutive games to clinch victory.
“I think she (Martinez) didn’t tell me anything new. She told me everything I already knew,” Andreeva added. “She just told me to keep going because I was playing well and to go for my shots, without changing anything.”
Swiatek’s defeat adds to a growing list of upsets in Dubai, following world number one Aryna Sabalenka’s exit on Wednesday. Andreeva’s fearless performance further disrupts the expected order in the competition, reinforcing her status as one of the brightest young talents in women’s tennis.
With a place in the final now within reach, the young Russian will look to carry her momentum forward and continue her remarkable journey in the tournament.
