Novak Djokovic has reached the semi-finals of the US Open for a record 14th time after beating American Taylor Fritz in four sets.
The 38-year-old Serbian won 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 on Tuesday, ending Fritz’s hopes of becoming the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since 2003.
Djokovic will now face Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals on Friday in what promises to be a thrilling match.
The match against Fritz lasted over three hours and was a close battle throughout. Fritz had his chances but only managed to take two of the 13 break points he had. Djokovic, on the other hand, stayed calm under pressure and took his opportunities when they came.
“It was a really close match and could have gone either way,” said Djokovic. “I was lucky to save some big break points in the second set. I think Fritz played better for large parts of the second and third sets.”
Fritz managed to win the third set, but Djokovic quickly regained control in the fourth to finish the match.
The result means Djokovic is now just two wins away from claiming his 25th Grand Slam title, a new all-time record.
